Vacation Research Scholarships
"The AMSI Vacation Research Scholarship gave me invaluable experience in mathematical research that I believe is highly applicable to my future academic endeavours. Over a six-week period, I became familiar with the cycle of discoveries and tribulations that are encountered when solving real-world problems. I was given the opportunity to collaborate with peers and mentors, and to present my findings to numerous industry professionals. I feel that the scheme provides a useful preparation for honours and PhD studies, and I would recommend it to aspiring researchers."

Luke Fitzpatrick, 2009/10 AMSI Vacation Research Scholar, Queensland University of Technology

Each year intending honours students from around Australia apply for the competitive Research Vacation Scholarships.

Scholarships comprise a six-week research project during the summer holiday. At the culmination of the project students come together with CSIRO vacation scholars and present their work to their peers at CSIRO’s Big Day In.

Reports by the vacation scholars are added annually.

  • “The Big Day In was a wonderful experience where I met many other young mathematicians and was exposed me to many previously unseen areas of mathematics. Researching and presenting my findings to other students and professionals from around Australia provided an experience which I would not have gained in an undergraduate degree.”

  • "The AMSI Vacation Scholarship students came away from the Scholarship with a much better appreciation of the need for a broad mathematical background when undertaking further study, this has served them well in honours, and will doubtless continue to serve them well throughout PhD studies"

    Prof. Joseph Grotowski
    University of Queensland

  • "The vacation scholarship scheme together with the Big Day In provided me with an introduction to mathematical research and the presentation of research to a wider audience. This experience encouraged me to consider further research, leading to my honours and PhD. I consider this as a valuable scheme, especially for undergraduate students, as it allows them to get a flavour of research in the real world"

  • "The AMSI Vacation Scholarship gave me a unique opportunity to experience in-depth mathematical research while I was still an undergraduate. This scheme and the AMSI Summer School were pivotal in my decision to pursue further mathematical studies"

    Scott Dawson
    2007/08 AMSI Vacation Scholar
    PhD Student

  • "Vacation Scholarships give students an opportunity to try and figure out which fields of mathematics they like or dislike which should help them in deciding what to do after their undergraduate studies - in my case the Vacation Scholarship greatly strengthened my enjoyment of analysis, which I continue to pursue in my PhD."
