Bio
Jan Thomas was AMSI’s Executive Officer until March 2011. She is now a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne and has an office at AMSI.
Before coming to AMSI she had a previous positions in teaching, as a consultant in schools and as lecturer in teacher education. Her research interests are concerned with the effect of language and culture on mathematics learning. She believes access to a good mathematics education, along with good communication skills, is fundamental to an equitable and socially just society. This requires an adequate supply of well-qualified mathematics teachers.
The first report on mathematics teacher supply and demand she was involved in was in 1987. Through various positions including President of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Council, the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies, Executive Officer for the Australian Mathematical Society and at AMSI, she has continued to argue for action on this vital issue. |
